Alright guys, right now the thing holding up my KA swap is swapping the bellhousings. I'm using a mkii C tranny and I plan on mating it with the KA bellhousing. The problem is I cannot for the life of me seperate the trannies from the bellhousings. All the horizontal bolts are out and we took off the front cover. We poked around trying to figure out what everyone was talking about with snap rings, but I couldn't manage to figure out what it was or how to remove it. I got the little C clip off, but that didn't seem to help anything. So if anyone can give a basic run through of how to remove this "snap ring" I'd greatly appreciate it.

I have never done it myself but I have heard that it is a little tricky. I know the ka section has some pictures/threads that should help you out.

Once you remove the front cover (inside the bell) the C clip that needs to be removed is around the bearing for the input shaft, its about 2.5"-3.0" in diameter. A pair of snap ring pliers really helps here, but its doable with a couple screwdrivers. Once thats off and all your main bolts are out you can stick a slim screwdriver in the seam of the two halves and pop it with a hammer a few times to begin the separation. Hope that helps.

Yeah once you get it apart with a screw driver a bit some belts with a firm rubber mallet finish it off.

Yeah, I guess I was kinda hoping it was something other than that little stupid black c clip. It was being a pain in the ass, but I'll just have to go at it a little more vigorously. Maybe I'll get some snap ring pliers, I was trying with needlenoses and was only having limited success

You will not get the two apart unless you remove that snap ring! Trust Me, buy yourself a set of snap ring pliers. They are totaly worth it and you will use them again. I promise!

just out of curiosity, why wouldnt you just pick up a KA tranny? I got mine for $200 including a fidanza flywheel.

He is probably doing the bellhousing trick because he doesn't want to cut his shifter back and lose the center console. Especially considering that it is an MkI which seemed to have the shifter a little bit further forward than the MkII's. Plus less hassle with getting a custom driveshaft made and fabricating tranny mounts, exc.

Gotcha, I wasnt really thinking. My S12 is stripped som in not worried about a console... and I planned on getting a solid one piece driveshaft despite which tranny I had.

its not the little black one its a larger silver one around the bearing. I just took apart my ka tranny today. found that some of first gear is missing and some other stuff is also busted up. its not that hard to get apart. but let the little black one on and take the larger silver one off.
