Full Version: Ka24 Swap?

I'm considering a possible engine swap into the s12. I'd prefer to go NA if I could. So I'm looking into the ka24de. What exactly do I need to complete this swap. My s12 is my daily driver and any swap that takes more than a few days is out of the question. I'm looking at getting everything I need before hand, everything. I would also like to get an estimate on a price for the entire swap, and/or each of the parts required.
I know I need:
the motor
ecu
tranny
driveshaft?
rearend?
motor mounts(need moved?)
tranny mount(need moved?)

My car is ca20 B-tranny btw. Which cars had the ka24de? If I'm not mistaken there is an s13 in the yard here. If everything I need is there, I'll consider buying the whole thing.

IF YOU'RE GONNA GO WITH AN R200 rear:

Driveshaft is an S13 front section and an S12 rear section, but that won't be a balanced assembly, and you will probably fuck up your trans because of it.

But you need to make the S13/S12 combo shaft so you can take it to a driveshaft shop and have them make a single piece shaft in the same length (with a U-joint on either end of course).

Some might say you can run with the combo shaft, but I wouldn't.

IF YOU'RE GOING WITH R180, read Waylon's thread:

Motor mounts I think are the same, or use S13 mounts (they fit fine).

Tranny mount... Look on my thread:

post # 3, a little ways down... you'll see the S13 tranny next to the S12 B-tranny. Scroll a bit more and there's some good pics of the trans mount and how you make it work. Some cutting, some grinding, some big ass washers tongue.gif But it works wink.gif

My question about the trannies is this, can an s12 c-tranny be used behind a ka24? If the s13 c is longer than the s12 c, then using the s12 c seems like the best course of action. The picture you had there had a c tranny and a b tranny side by side from what i can tell, and said it was s13/s14?

As for a possible turbo down the road, can a ka24de handle a turbo or supercharger?

You should be able that mix-n-match thing with the R180. Basically, its S13 front half of driveshaft+ whatever is already in the rear half of your S12. Waylon had issues I think because of his auto-trans equipped car, that situation has yet to be sorted 100%.

A custom driveshaft is a good solution regardless, but it will involve more down time than what you stated.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SWAP REAR ENDS. I mean, you could if you wanted to, but the R180 will hold the KA's output just fine.

Use the KA engine's motor mounts, or some aftermarket KA motor mounts, or two hockey pucks stacked on each other for both sides.

The tranny mount will need to be adjusted as they ^ have mentioned.

well if you have a c-style transmission in your s12 you could just swap the bellhouse from the ka transmission on to the ca20 s12 transmission, then you don't have to move the trans mount or modifiy the driveshaft, this was my plan before i found out about the diffrence in mounting points between the auto bodys and the standard 5sp bodys. this will only work with 2 c-style transmissions, the s12 gear box and the ka bellhouse, and you'll need some good sillicone or 'honda bond', like i used, to seal the transmissions back together. i personally have done this and have been inside the transmissions more times than i can remember, if you decide to go this way and have any questions i can help how ever i can, just pm me and ask.

and ka24de's are said to handle moderate boost well in stock form

our r180's are special. well not really that much but they are a 4 pinion diff, to where as most other cars equipped with a r180 were 2 pinion. i think thats where they get thier bad rep from. a 24e has the same bottom end as a 24de just no squirters, it too can handle moderate boost. and it has less moving parts.
