Full Version: Getting the S12 gauge cluster to work with KA24DE?

This is something I'm sorting through, along with Sterling and a few others.

Right now, the tach doesn't work. Presumably the speedo does, although neither Sterling nor I have driven the car fast enough to see the needle move.

But for the speedometer:

Just put your speed sensor into the s13 transmission. Both the analog and the digital cluster use the same kind of speed sensor (cable driven), but the analog runs the cable all the way into the dash and connects directly into the back of the gauge cluster.

The digital setup runs the cable to a spot on the passenger side shock tower, inside the engine bay. There it ends at a little cylindrical converter that has an electrical connector coming out of it. This electrical connector sends a signal to the dash harness gangbox (in the passenger side foot area), and then wires all the way through to the digital gauge cluster.

For the tachometer:

Well, that's what we're trying to figure out tongue.gif

The nice thing about our cars is that the dummy lights are separate from the gauge cluster.

A number of you have KA24DE swaps. How did you wire your tach up?

does this not work for the tach? http://www.club-s12.org/forums/index.php?s...483&hl=tach

does this also work for the ka24e? ninja.gif

Philip says it does, but he doesn't explain how he got his aftermarket tach wired up in the first place. I PM'd him about that, maybe he can post here or if he just PM's me back I'll post the info here.

But apparently yes, he has a working tachometer in an S12 w/ KA24DE. I'm just not sure if he has an earlier KA24DE or the later one like mine where the distributor has the coil built into it.

Here are the two connectors on my '95 KA24DE distributor, w/ built-in coil:

like i said i read through his tach thread better the second time and it's not realy said in there,, i remembered reading it a wile ago and thought it was in there, but. i beleive philip's ka was the 96' obd2 converted back to obd1 setup, but i know for a fact my distributor only has one plug, i got a 93' though, the tach signal comes off the coil somewhere though right? i remember msd saying something about the tach and how i might have to add a resistor to get the tach to function right with the 6al box i have, but i'm still in the dark on wireing yet so i really don't have any concreet info to add just my thoughts of ideas huh.gif
Arro
Well I PM'd Philip and asked him, so we'll see what he says.

My electronics are '95 OBD1, but '95 was a trick year with some hybridization of things... so my dizzy might more resemble the later OBD2 units.

You should all take pictures of your distributors and post them here so we can keep our info straight.

Open distributor (remove cap) locate coil and find the wire attached to the coil with "-" next to it, note the colour of the wire, trace this to the outside plug, splice in a wire and run it to the Green wire on the back of the cluster that plugs into the back of the Tacho 4 pin plug also green i think (colour blind) Bingo........You will also be able to find an engine bay wire to attach it to if your was a CA type engine, i think the engine bay colour is Blue, (don't quote me on that check wiring diagram in the FSM )
Arro
Is the blue wire part of the bundle that is in the fender?

Does someone have the FSM pinout diagram for the gangbox that connects the dash harness?
ryan206
Couldn't you just get the pinout from the ECU and Splice it from there? It would probably be a lot easier.
Lister
The ecu tacho signal will be too weak to drive the Tacho in the dash.

I am running an OBD1 KA setup so I have an external coil. To get my stock tach to work, I ran a jumper wire from the coil (large green/black wire) to the tach signal wire at the cluster.

Arro, for your tach situation, see if you can find an ECU pinout. Listed should be a tach signal coming out of the ecu. Run a jumper from that wire up to the tach wire at the cluster.
FOUND IT!

For the speedo, I kept my stock trans and used a KA bell housing.
Arro
Hmm that says "OBD II" but I had thought some '95 were OBD1, some were OBD2. I can give it a shot tho.
Philipn126
The pinout given there is an OBD2 and should match your ecu. Some 95's were either one way or the other. Kinda like the 1995 and a half.

Dude, when you are ready to figure this out, you need to call me. The wiring is already almost there, you should not need to go behind the dash.

That pinout might be the key tho, thats a good find.
Arro
I tried calling you, but nobody home innocent2.gif We'll figure it out tomorrow night.

OK So I checked out the S14 wiring diagram and it seems that there is a transistor for the coil. I'm not very technical on electronics(although I do love working with them). Basically a transistor is used to amplify a signal. I guess with the right transistor, you could use it to raise the tach signal enough to power the stock tach maybe? I know the S12s have a transistor harness for the coil also. I wish I knew more about electronics to create a sort of tach adapter board or something. The stock tach gets it's signal from the coil, so I guess if you could somehow tap into the coil plug wire for the S14 to get a signal? I'll keep looking into this since I want this figured out.

We've pretty much got it figured out, I'll test it and hook it up when I'm out there.

With Henry's car, same situation, when he's ready to work on it, we'll just go over some stuff, and test some things, and we should be able to figure that out as well....

ive got the same running gear as you arro, obd1 95 awesomeness, my tach is dead too hahaha. let me know guys, i always seem to break the speedo cables too? they break by the cluster park, its a little brittle plastic piece that always breaks. hmmmmfff, hollar

I'll give you a call by next week sterling, woop woop

Cool, then we can get this sorted....
