Im under the impression that if you have a MarkII, such as your 87, then you can use a slip-in style s13 shifter because of the c-tranny. But NOT the B&M style where it replaces the entire top plate.
Arro
Osad you are correct 100%.

For S12's:

The first one (Type "1") will work ONLY with 86 1/2 and up cars with the S12 "C" trans, NOT the earlier ones with the S12 "B" trans. If you are uncertain which is which, pay attention to the difference in the shifter design ("C" trans is on the left, "B" trans is on the right):

For those w/ KA or SR swaps:

Now, for those of you with S13/S14swaps (SR, KA, some CA18DET), you can use the second style (Type "2"), but you will have to use five out of six holes, because the cheap chinese knockoffs do not have the right offset hole:

IPB Image

The knock-offs place the two middle holes evenly, which as you can see in the above pic of a KA trans, won't work. You can run the cheapo knock-off one still, you just have to RTV that hole. Sterling gets freaked and says "bad idea" but I say it's fine as long as you RTV the one hole and run bolts in the other five. And actually, that cheapo knockoff chinese version is on MY car's KA trans, and was installed by Sterling. Seems to be alright. I'm sure with Ultra Black RTV you will be fine.

OR you can spend a lot of money on an actual B&M brand which has the holes all in the right places. It's expensive but it looks amazing, billet machined aluminum. and every bolt hole lines up with the S13/S14 trans:

So is the only thing that works for mkI b trannys is the 280zx ss? Because I have a c's left over from my s13. Kinda wanna use it.
Arro
280ZX shifter works in an S12 w/ "B" style trans, yes.

What is a "c's"? If you are talking about a short throw shifter from an S13, as long as it is a Type "1" and you have an S12 w/ a C trans it will work.
zilvia_brothers
im running a stock s13 shifter and i like it...its the right height compared to the stock truck height shifter lol

Don't get the type 2 ebay one as Arro listed there, as the flanges for the mounting surfaces DO NOT line up, and the rtv has to be super stupid thick in order to cover the gap, which will fail in time. The slip-over type like the first one pictured is fine for S12s with the 'C' transmission (86.5+) which is what I have, and its nice.

A freebe if you have the earlier 'B' trans is to simply remove the shifter out of the trans, remove the two plastic bushings that are inserted in the shifter, flip them upside down, and reinstall. This will make the shifts noticably shorter for no money at all although you will retain stock length. Just did this on an 85 I'm working on atm, and rather impressed with the results. Again, this trick is for 'B' trans only.
Praizewood
How much work involves putting in a a short shifter into a c trans? Is it possible to do without taking off the transmission?
Xano
Its a C-clip and a yank to get the old one out, and then you slip the new one in, and reinstall the c-clip, and its done. All this can be done from inside your vehicle with the shift boots all removed.

My shifter was installed upside down, and was bashing into my stereo face plate, so I had to swap it around, took about 10 minutes total. (10 minutes because the C-clip pliers i have SUCK.)

ok so i should buy the type one and not the one with the rectangle plate
since i have a 87

Yes. The Type 2 won't work on your trans...the rectangle-shaped plate for the S12's "C" trans isn't even the same length as the S13/S14 rectangle-shaped plate.

Sterling is leaving out part of a discussion between him and I, it may be that some people with S13/S14 transmissions may be able to use that Type 2 version, that there may be some transmissions that fit it and some that do not. We all know that Nissan revises things.

At any rate, the B&M part has the offset holes, so if your KA/SR trans has an offset hole, then the B&M will fit 100%. I didn't realize he had to "RTV the shit out of" my trans tongue.gif So probably at some point I will switch to the perfect-fit B&M unit.

I'm going to ask for more info on other forums to find out more about the Type 2. AGAIN the Type 2 is NOT for stock S12 Mark II transmissions ("C" trans), you must use Type 1.

Not necesarily. You could have an '86, or you could have an '86.5. Bart has an '86 and it came with a "B" trans. Mod Mastas has an '86 and it came with a "C" trans. You need to look at the trans comparison picture above and see which one yours looks like to figure out which you have.

this is the one I'm using on my 86 c trans your gonna want to jb weld the threads on the shifter it's a 2 piece because if not it's gonna spin around and that gets annoying lol but other than that I like it
Arro
JB weld? Sounds kinda permanent. I don't think Sterling had to do that.

So I got some feedback from some S13 forums, apparently that knock off shifter (the Type "2") is just made incorrectly, but has been used a number of times... some people do it like mine and leave the bolt out. Others redrill in the right place and JB-weld the wrong place shut, then RTV and install. Both have good results, but again nothing will fit the S13/S14 trans better than the B&M.

200sxkitcar
yeah, its not the hole that is a huge concern, its the fact that the flange placements for the gasket are off. not a good buy imo, seeing as the cheaper and simpler clip-over type works pretty well and no rtv/gasket of any kind needed.
EightySix200SX
hung knows im running a 720 pickup b trans shifter in the 5spd i have. 12-16 inches of pure shift rod!
200sxkitcar
TIGHT

I demand pics!
EightySix200SX
when i get to work tmrw ill snap pick. 720p/u shifer+nismo knob= win. now all i need is a magnum condom errr.i mean tall shift boot for it. once its in the car
demonic s12
i was running the type 1 style and had good results with the c trans.

it is a good idea to lock the upper portion of the shift lever assy as it does come loose quite easily

The trans code is on the silver plate under your hood on the firewall... look there to know for sure.

OR take off your shifter boot... If it's a plate with six bolts it's a C trans, If it's the shifter with a bolt going through it, it's a B trans..

If it's a B trans. Flip the bushing wink.gif

ok i got the new short shifter installed with the parts it came with but it feels a lil loose is that right? should i add some extra grease for lubriciation? oh and im just double checking but that clip that i took out doesnt have to go back in with the new parts does it cause it was a b**** to get out and i know it will be even harder to get back in. keep in mind i have an 87 200sx so i have the ball style shifter not the plate one

iirc a c's would work if you had a mkII C transmission

and those ebay short shifters dont exactly have tight tolerances lol.gif you'll probably have to mod/improvise to get it tight and nice

what feels loose?

it should feel pretty tight through the gears, similar to a mustang.

This thread is exactly what I was looking for. I almost bought a B&M Style because I heard they fit....

Are there any brands suggested of the Type "1" slip in style?
(I have an 87 with a c trans)
nismologist
bought the fiurst pictured one from fidanza and it was an awesomely better feel and shift.
dwardle
Awesome, thanks nismologist. I'll look up the Fidanza model tonight.

Looked through the posts again twice but could not find any product codes. Just to be sure, did you get the Nissan 240SX 89-98, Part# 843020?
