Full Version: Swap Out B Tranny For C Tranny?
Club-S12.org > Technical Forums > Drivetrain Tech
Keith
I found a low mileage mk2 ca20 coupe 5 spd at the pnp the other day. Still has the tranny in it, and was thinking I should get it....but was curious if it was a direct swap into a mk1 car, and if not whats involved? Will my original driveshaft work, or do I need the c trans driveshaft, etc?
My B tranny is starting to grind and stuff, and has around 280k miles on it. Thought it might be a good time to swap it out, if it's do-able.

Thanks

It is doable but grab that front driveshaft as well as the c-trans is longer (not by much but still longer) it will swap right over....oh that's right you have the det....that shouldn't matter tho it still should be a direct swap over. How are you usuing the b trans with the det....Nevermind I just thought about it anyway yes is the answer i'm getting to lol

B trans I'm using with the original driveshaft.
So grab the front driveshaft from the mk2...thats it? Will the c tranny bolt up to the mk1 tranny mount location...or will something custom have to be fabbed up?
mod_mastaz
You're going to need to custom fab a trans mount, similar to how Arro/Henry did their mount. Or you can go the route Andrew/Justin did. There are various ways to get around it. Talk to Sterling for your options as he's done this various times.

your going to have to modify the c trans mount like the mk1 ka swap guys have to...there should be some pics of how people have modded their mounts somewhere in the kade section...i have read tho that if you file the mount down in a certain spot just a little bit it will work fine. I havent even looked real close at how the c trans mount was modded on my notch. Also, the c trans is way smoother then the b trans...its a good upgrade keith! If my 18det hatch was running i would do it myself...one day tho.
nismologist
he is using a stock 200sx c trans so he should be fine witht he mount that is on the 5 spd trans.the trans isnt the c trans from a 240sx.

no sir, joe.

the chassis' are different MKI to MKII

that was what i was thinking when i was reading that actually...that and i was like...if the mk1 and mk2 tranny mount holes where the same then there would be no point in modding the c trans mount...they would just fit.
sideways_s12
I swapped from a btrans to a ctrans and didn't need to fab a mount I just used the c trans mount
Keith
alright guys.....getting conflicting info here....which is it...custom mount or c mount?
Arro
Jason get your black azz under your car and snap us a pic of the mount thumbsup2.gif

sam31183
gathering from what sideways has said i would have to say that the c trans mount will bolt up...it sounds like you only have to modify a c trans mount if it is a ka trans.
EightySix200SX
waylons car was originaly an auto which is why he had to create a new crossmember. arent all stick s12's b and c trans the same???

ne way
all u need is

trans and front half of drive shaft grab the crossmember too.

a mk1.5/mk2 conversion is a follows.. the again i was auto tho so my method will not apply

edit...I can't snap a pic because the trans is in Justins car now lol

Ok so I can swap in a manual tranny from an Mk2 s12 directly onto my ka24de going into my Mk1 turbo (manual as well) and the stock tranny cross member should bolt right up?
Arro
No you have to make a custom trans mount/crossmember. That's what they're saying.

The ka needs a custom mount but mk2 to mk1 does not....

Wow...I didn't realize there were any members that close to me, and one with a ca18det....we need to meet up!
I may take you up on the offer...my wife and I are over in ATL often enough. How many miles are on it? Any problems with it? I Assume it's a 5 spd tongue.gif

I bought it from a j/y it had less than 100K. If you like, I also have a C trans minus the bell housing (used bellhousing for my ka tranny swap)so now it has a ka housing, but the tranny is good. "She who must be obeyed" gives me a hard time about my "spare" parts. So yeah come and get it or if I can aquire a engine mount soon, I'll even drive mine and meet you some where.
