Yo... Bought a KA24E out of a 1990 240sx this morning, included MAF, AEM Intake System, Radiator and Starter, all for $90! On the downside, it has a "spun rod bearing" but the top end has been built and was dyno'd at 180hp 2,000 miles ago.

I'm wondering what happens when an engine has a bad rod bearing? What should I be looking for? While the engine is out and on a stand (Sitting on a tire until I can get a stand sad.gif ) what should be replaced / fixed / modified / machined?

New to rebuilding engines but very very excited to jump into it. I have a budget, I live paycheck to paycheck but I have time to tear it down and I want it done right. I'm aiming for 230 - 260 HP and of course I want to turbo this engine.

Any input is appreciated!

um everything?

lol just do a stock rebuild and put a turbo on it

i highly doubt it had 180 wheel hp

The first thing your looking at is the condition of the crank; how scored it is.

Second is why it happened; stretch the rod bolts? Plugged oil passage? etc.

The term spun bearing is used pretty loosely. It could have actually spun the bearing; where the rod is going to need work or replaced. Or it could have starved for oil and ground up the bearing and crank. Or it could have pumped crap through the bearing.

It'd be nice to know the the cause so you can insure that nothing gets by you. But just do a sano job when rebuilding and check everything as it goes back together.

Either way mic, everything and clean those oil passages. Make sure your open the oil pump or replace it.

id just do a stock oem rebuild. some new bearings, check the condition of crank, rods, machine as nesscary, maybe some rings and clean up the cylinders.

and that thing definetly didnt make 180whp... doesnt look like a aem intake either, some kind of ungodly autzone special. stock fpr, exhaust manifold, etc.. doesnt appear to be built by any means.

Thanks for all the input. I have no proof the car was doing 180hp but thats all I'm told innocent2.gif . I'll start tearing it down this week sometime, I'm trying like hell to get an engine stand. I said AEM intake because of this:

Now that I think about it, wouldn't be too hard to slap an AEM sticker on an Ebayed intake.

That is just an aem intake cut up to fit. It was probably one for a DOHC.

Here's a basic guide on what a budget rebuild is like

Just make sure that the crank is still good. You should be able to tell just by looking at it.

it was most likely 108hp instead of 180hp. If you go look at davidb's dyno post though you will see what a sohc puts out.
